Lesson 1: Performance and its link to feedback<\/h2>\n

Milestones<\/h3>\n

Milestones is usually a term used to explain a specific point within a project or a plan to measure the progress toward the ultimate goal.<\/h5>\n
Milestones can be used also during the performance tracking of team members.<\/h5>\n
To be able to monitor a team member’s progress and provide meaningful appraisal data or constructive feedback, you need open communication channels and accurate performance records.<\/h5>\n
The point of doing so is to have no surprises.<\/h5>\n
The difficult part isn’t keeping the door open so the team can update you on their progress in the weekly meeting, the difficult part is knowing when and how to track the kinds of progress that the team members can’t easily self-report, or sometimes even see.<\/h5>\n
These milestones are basically an agreement between you and the team member that reaching a specific point means that it’s done and you’re off to the next one.<\/h5>\n

Let’s take an example.<\/h5>\n
You’re developing a performance improvement plan, and as explained previously, it needs to contain tangible results that you can visit at specific times to ensure their completion.<\/h5>\n
These could be considered milestones.<\/h5>\n
Milestones can work with performance improvement, knowledge development, or even the team member’s personal growth.<\/h5>\n
You can set milestones for almost anything.<\/h5>\n
The great thing about milestones is that they are like signs on the road.<\/h5>\n
When you’re driving somewhere that is 300km away from you and through the road, you see many signs telling you how much you have left to reach your destination, without the signs on the road, you would be completely lost.<\/h5>\n
The same applies to the team members, without the milestones in their relationship with you, they might get demotivated not knowing where they are going.<\/h5>\n
The same applies to you, if you don’t know what milestones you need to achieve to move to the next level in your career, you would be sailing in open waters without a destination.<\/h5>\n
Milestones are like the north star for many different areas in our professional and personal lives which allows us to know where we are and where to go next.
Try practicing milestones with yourself first and next with your team, you’ll see a difference in motivation and focus.
