Lesson 2: Personal Leadership traits, trait theories<\/h2>\n

Gordon Allport Theory Traits<\/h3>\n

Gordon Allport was an American psychologist who is best known for his work on personality and trait theory. Allport’s trait theory proposes that an individual’s personality is composed of a set of fundamental traits, which are relatively stable and enduring over time.<\/h5>\n
According to Allport, traits can be classified into three categories: cardinal traits, central traits, and secondary traits.<\/h5>\n
Cardinal traits are the dominant traits that define an individual’s personality and behavior, while central traits are the more general characteristics that influence an individual’s behavior in various situations. Secondary traits are more specific to certain situations and may not be as enduring as cardinal or central traits.<\/h5>\n
Allport also proposed that traits can be either common or unique to an individual. Common traits are those that are shared by many people, such as honesty or loyalty, while unique traits are those that are specific to an individual and may not be shared by others.<\/h5>\n
One of the key strengths of Allport’s trait theory is its focus on the uniqueness of individuals. Unlike other trait theorists who proposed a universal set of traits that apply to all individuals,<\/h5>\n
Allport emphasised that each individual possesses a unique combination of traits that makes them distinct from others.<\/h5>\n
However, one criticism of Allport’s trait theory is that it does not provide a clear framework for understanding how traits interact with each other and with situational factors to influence behavior.<\/h5>\n
