Emotional Competence
\n<\/h3>\n

An emotional competence is a learned capability based on emotional intelligence that results in outstanding performance at work<\/h5>\n
At the heart of this competence are two abilities: empathy, which involves reading the feelings of others, and social skills, which allow handling those feelings artfully.<\/h5>\n
Our emotional intelligence determines our potential for learning the practical skills that are based on its five elements: self-awareness, motivation, self-regulation, empathy, and adeptness in relationships<\/h5>\n
Our emotional competence shows how much of that potential we have translated into on-the-job capabilities<\/h5>\n
For instance, being good at serving customers is an emotional competence based on empathy<\/h5>\n
Likewise, trustworthiness is a competence based on self-regulation, or handling impulses and emotions well. Both customer service and trustworthiness are competencies that can make people outstanding in their work.<\/h5>\n
Simply being high in emotional intelligence does not guarantee a person will have learned the emotional competencies that matter for work<\/h5>\n
It means only that they have excellent potential to learn them<\/h5>\n
A person might be highly empathic, for example, and yet not have learned the skills based on empathy that translate into superior customer service<\/h5>\n

Emotional competencies cluster into groups
\n<\/h3>\n

Each based on a common underlying emotional intelligence capacity.<\/h5>\n
The underlying emotional intelligence capacities are vital if people are to successfully learn the competencies necessary to succeed in the workplace<\/h5>\n
If they are deficient in social skills, for instance, they will be inept at persuading or inspiring others<\/h5>\n
There are several emotional intelligence capacities that fall under the five clusters of emotional competencies. Here are some examples:<\/h5>\n
