What is a pivot table?
\n<\/h3>\n

A pivot table summarizes large amounts of data in a more digestible, at-a-glance format.<\/h5>\n
It does this by grouping the data in a meaningful way,<\/h5>\n
for example by showing the sum or average values of certain variables.<\/h5>\n
Let’s imagine you have data for a chain of department stores.<\/h5>\n
Your dataset includes data on the sales made each month in two different store locations. You want to be able to see, at a glance, how each store performed across the year, but it’s impossible to know when faced with thousands of rows of data in a spreadsheet.<\/h5>\n
Here’s where a pivot table can help. You’d add up the total sales for each store for each month of the year, and summarize the data in a pivot table, like so:<\/h5>\n

How to create a pivot table in excel:
Based on our previous example<\/h5>\n
1. Open your Excel worksheet that contains the data on sales made each month in two different store locations.<\/h5>\n
2. Select the entire dataset, including headers.<\/h5>\n
3. Go to the “Insert” tab on the Excel ribbon and click on “PivotTable” in the “Tables” group.<\/h5>\n
4. In the “Create PivotTable” dialog box, make sure the range selected in step 2 is correct and select where you want to place your pivot table (a new worksheet or an existing one).<\/h5>\n
5. Click on “OK”.<\/h5>\n
6. You should now see a blank pivot table with a “PivotTable Fields” pane on the right side of the screen.<\/h5>\n
7. Drag the “Store Location” field to the “Rows” area in the “PivotTable Fields” pane.<\/h5>\n
8 .Drag the “Month” field to the “Columns” area in the “PivotTable Fields” pane.<\/h5>\n
9 .Drag the “Sales” field to the “Values” area in the “PivotTable Fields” pane.<\/h5>\n
10. By default, Excel will summarize the values in the “Values” area using the “SUM” function. You can change this by clicking on the drop-down arrow next to “Sum of Sales” in the pivot table and selecting a different summary function, such as “Average” or “Count”.<\/h5>\n
11. You should now see a pivot table that summarizes the sales made by each store for each month of the year.<\/h5>\n
12. You can customise the pivot table further by adding or removing fields, changing the layout, or applying formatting.<\/h5>\n
