Learning from mistakes<\/h3>\n

Stopping this cycle of blame starts with appreciation and acknowledgment of good work.
By acknowledging good work, you pressure the room to focus on doing good rather than thinking that they will be better if it’s not their mistake.
A good way of detecting a blame culture is to look at the leader’s reaction when a mistake arises.<\/h5>\n
If they start their investigation by asking “Who made the mistake?” instead of asking “What went wrong?” or “How can we fix it?” This may be a clear sign of a blame culture.<\/h5>\n
A blame culture contradicts a growing culture where mistakes are owned and people take responsibility for it,<\/h5>\n
which would lead to a mistake being identified and improvements considered, and let’s face it, people learn from experience and mistakes, it’s not always from books and seminars.<\/h5>\n
Another great way that you can practice yourself is by asking a slightly different question which is
“How can we avoid it in the future?”
Asking this straightforward question will redirect the focus from people toward the issue itself.<\/h5>\n
It will allow the team to think about the possibilities for solutions and create a stronger reaction toward mistakes.
Even for yourself, when you start your way of addressing mistakes with this question to yourself before asking the team,
This will allow you to think about the possibilities and different innovative ways to overcome obstacles.<\/h5>\n
Work will always have mistakes, the road to leading the mistakes starts with you.
What’s a much more advanced way of learning from mistakes, is by admitting the mistakes that you personally did.<\/h5>\n
Remember when we mentioned that leading by example is a great way to create trust and values in the team?<\/h5>\n
This is also one of them.
Of course, none of us like doing so, and leaders or managers can often be particularly fearful.<\/h5>\n
Aren’t they supposed to be the ones who know better, aren’t they supposed to be in their position, for exactly that reason? But here’s the real deal, leaders do mistakes and in most cases, their mistakes are much bigger and require a lot of effort to be contained.<\/h5>\n
An insecure and weak leader will hate admitting that anything has gone wrong and will try to spin the situation to their advantage and the outcome is that they nor their team members will learn anything from this.<\/h5>\n
This is a sure way to lose the respect of your team and your fellow leaders.
Instead, you want to be at peace that showing vulnerability, and empathy is no weakness.<\/h5>\n
In fact, it is a strength.<\/h5>\n
The key here is to understand how to show your ability to take responsibility for mistakes in front of everyone.<\/h5>\n
Taking full responsibility and apologizing for mistakes are important indicators of your courage.
Your team will look to see whether you are courageous before they fully buy into your leadership capabilities.<\/h5>\n
If they see courage, they’ll feel there’s someone there to make the tough calls and take responsibility for them and make them feel safe and protected when things get tough.<\/h5>\n
It’s a confidence that allows the whole team to get on with their jobs and feel able to try new things and stay innovative to see what works best no matter what the obstacles or circumstances are.<\/h5>\n
Another tip is to do it early, don’t wait until it’s forced out of you to admit.<\/h5>\n
The sooner you do it, the sooner you can learn and move on.<\/h5>\n
Be sincere, and work to leverage it into a strength to use to your advantage. Of course, admitting a mistake and not aiming to learn from or fix it, is a sure way to undermine your standing.<\/h5>\n
But an even worse habit is to become more and more risk-averse if you do hit a few stumbles along the way.<\/h5>\n
Your mistakes can teach you and others great lessons so don’t be afraid to share that knowledge with others so they too are better prepared to head down the right path, using your valuable insights and example.<\/h5>\n
Of course, when it is your team that has made the mistake, leaders should stand behind their team and take responsibility, and share the experience and knowledge to grow.<\/h5>\n
